Position Overview & Specifications

We are a small firm of Costs Lawyers that provide legal costs services and advice to firms of solicitors. We are searching for a Trainee Law Costs Draftsman to join our team.

This is an opportunity to join a supportive firm with a strong focus on employee development, practising in the area of legal costs arising from complex litigation cases.

The Role

On a day to day basis a law costs draftsman will be required to draft bills of costs and various other legal documents on behalf of solicitors. They will be required to advise solicitors on aspects of costs and may also be required to engage in negotiations with opposing parties regarding solicitor’s costs. Full training will be provided.

This is a full-time and remote working role.

The basic starting salary is £21,000.00 per annum. In addition, you will receive an uncapped monthly bonus scheme based on your billing.

The potential earnings on completion of training as a Law Costs Draftsman will be in excess of £30,000.00.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

  • Liaising with parties involved in claims, including clients, the court and barristers.
  • Assisting with preparing and reviewing costs pleadings, such as bills of costs and costs budgets.
  • Reviewing time ledgers.
  • Assisting with issuing court proceedings.
  • Arranging conferences with clients and counsel.
  • Attending client meetings and note taking where necessary.
  • Assisting with preparation for court hearings.
  • Conducting legal research.
  • Maintaining a case management system.

Requirements

The ideal candidate would have the following:

  • Minimum education standard of 5 GCSEs grades A-C or equivalent with established interest in law either through further education or experience
  • Strong communication skills with people at all levels.
  • An ability to organise and prioritise tasks using initiative.
  • An ability to demonstrate attention to detail.
  • Strong literacy and IT skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
  • Good team worker with the flexibility to do what is required to ensure client service levels are met.

Recruitment Procedure
