The school has exciting vacancies and would like to appoint an enthusiastic and organised placement student to undertake a 12 month work placement to support its activities in the following subject areas: Automotive Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Electronic Engineering and Civil Engineering.

Please note this position is only open to students studying at Birmingham City University within the School of Engineering and the Built Environment

This is a multi-faceted role where the candidate will be expected to be responsible for activities which will include developing and presenting high quality technical demonstrations of appropriate subject specific concepts, preparing resources for teaching, providing technical and classroom support as well as contributing to Open Days, Applicant Visit Days and other course related events. There may also be opportunity to contribute to research and / or external activities associated with the subject areas.

The position will involve flexible working as required, including evenings and weekends.

It is anticipated that the successful candidate will be a student on a programme of study that is specific to one of these four subject areas. Strong technical, communication, problem solving and presentation skills will be advantageous for this role.

This post is only open to candidates already resident and studying on an undergraduate course in EBE. Applicants are advised to check with their Course Administrator regarding how this placement could affect their course fees and funding arrangements.

It is expected that the placement for the successful candidate will run from September 2023 to August 2024.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide technical support with an ability to engage the interest of students and support their learning, primarily in the labs and workshop as needed.
  • Make the best use of technical resources and develop technical support services to meet emerging needs working with students, academic colleagues, and external clients.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • The successful candidate will have completed year two of a relevant degree with appropriate content to one of: Mechanical, automotive, manufacturing, electronics or civil engineering.

We are a practice-based department, our undergraduate programmes are delivered using the CDIO (Conceive, Design, Implement and Operate) framework, making our teaching and research relevant to the evolving world around us. We work in a collaborative and cross disciplinary culture, interacting freely across the school and with colleagues in other schools is encouraged to gain a unique insight into impactful problem domains.

The school’s laboratories and workshop have recently received a £7M investment including the refurbishment of the workshop, engine test cells, additive manufacturing facilities and advanced electronics manufacture.
