Why this job matters

In order to enable BT’s ambitious plans for its Consumer function to be successful and to enable new and innovative uses of data to deliver bold new services to consumers across a broad range of verticals, we require a skilled and experienced senior lawyer who understands how to bring expertise, knowledge and creative solutions around privacy and data issues. This role will support the Consumer customer facing unit as well as the wider BT Group as part of the Data Legal team.
What you’ll be doing

  • Provide specialist data legal advice and support to the Consumer CFU (and other parts of the group where required) in relation to achieving their objectives in a way that manages key legal and regulatory risks, whilst balancing the interests of all stakeholders
  • Advise Consumer in a clear and practical manner concerning issues arising across the range of Consumer propositions including TV, digital advertising, identity, customer marketing, AI, new verticals (e.g. healthcare, security, finance)
  • Build strong working relationships across the Data Legal Compliance & Assurance team, Consumer Legal & Regulatory team and with other stakeholders to ensure operational synergies and compliance for Consumer activities
  • Deliver specialist legal support and second line support on data disputes, litigation, regulatory and other legal matters; manage the quick resolution of issues and escalate to senior legal team members as necessary
  • Draft and negotiate complex data protection aspects of contracts with key strategic partners
  • Draft data protection impact assessments for large complex projects and assist first line impact assessment review team with escalated complex assessments
  • Mentor and coach lawyers and compliance professionals to develop and ensure performance
  • Provide guidance, knowhow and training as appropriate to business colleagues, PIA reviewers and others on relevant aspects of data related law and practice (including data protection, AI, digital related legislation)
The skills you'll need

  • Qualified lawyer with 5+ years data experience
  • Understanding of UK and EU data protection laws and practices including UK GDPR and PECR
  • Data Protection Qualification (BCS/ISEB or CIPP/E) (preferred but not essential)
  • Ability to take a nuanced, innovative and risk-based approach to data protection issues, provide the business with options and help to find creative solutions to challenges
  • Experience of working across multiple business functions in particular Technology, Security, Risk & Compliance
  • Ability to focus on priority cases, manage multiple stakeholders to meet deadlines
  • Experience advising senior stakeholders on complex legal issues and help navigate through business change
  • Ability to draft and negotiate the full range of data related documentation including complex data protection aspects of key agreements and clear and easy to read customer-facing documentation
  • Experience of handling customer and regulatory complaints, claims and investigations
