About the role

Reporting to the Head of Technology and Enterprise Architecture, the Data Scientist is one of the digital team’s critical functions in delivering a data driven business aligned with our company’s vision. This new pioneering role is integral to the success of the Carey Group's 5-year strategic plan and goal to deliver digital transformation that drives business value and delivers a data strategy that enables our business units to achieve their objectives.

The primary purpose of this role is to ‘see the unseen’ across the business in analysing data and manipulating data to find innovative ways to solve business problems and deliver improvements across all areas of the company. This exciting role will support the development of Careys data strategy and have responsibility for managing data, working closely with both internal stakeholders and external partners to address challenges through data innovation and new opportunities for the business.

The Data Scientist will support and coach the business to visualise the benefits of data and provide the drive to create a digital culture and data driven business where digital and data is at the heartbeat of the Company.

Key responsibilities

  • Work with a wide range of stakeholders and functional teams within Careys, to both educate staff on the possibilities of ML and to identify opportunities where ML, AI and data analytical methods can be used in the construction environment.
  • Create and give innovative reports and presentations to clearly portray insights, results and added value to internal and external clients.
  • Derive trends and insights and design visually innovative online dashboards to explain data analysis.
  • Build credible statistical models from data using the best coding practices to generate reproducible work.
  • Explore and visualise data to present the ‘story’ in a meaningful way to a range of technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Use an evolving range of data analysis tools and techniques, including open source, some of which must be learnt quickly, as required.
  • Support strategic and operational decision making to create impact, drawing on other technical and analytical standards from across different sectors.
  • Work with policy and operations to understand where data science can add value.
  • Take an interdisciplinary focus, using techniques and knowledge from across the scientific spectrum.

Technical Skills and Experience

  • Minimum 3-years post-qualification experience using a variety of data mining/data analysis methods and data and coding tools.
  • Masters in Computer Science, or similar, including statistics-based degree.
  • Experienced and capable of building and implementing models, algorithms and creating/running simulations and data architectures.
  • Experience using statistical computer languages (R, Python, etc.) to manipulate data and draw insights from large data sets.
  • Knowledge of a variety of machine learning techniques (clustering, decision tree learning, artificial neural networks, etc.) and their real-world advantages/drawbacks.
  • Knowledge of advanced statistical techniques and concepts (regression, properties of distributions, statistical tests and proper usage, etc.) and experience with applications.
  • Demonstrable understanding of how to expose data from systems (for example, through APIs), link data from multiple systems and deliver streaming services.
  • Experience of applying data governance in a maturing business.
  • Experience using cloud-based services.
  • Some experience with distributed data/computing tools: Map/Reduce, Hadoop, Hive, Spark etc.
  • Proven experience with SQL, BI tools and spreadsheets.

  • 37.5hrs per week (9.00am – 5.30pm Monday – Thursday, 8.30am-4.30pm Fridays)
