Position Overview & Specifications

JOB TITLE: Animal Caretaker

HOURS: Part Time

CONTRACT: Permanent

HOURLY RATE: £10.90 per hour or £16.35 per hour for bank holidays

Change of Scene provides outdoor learning to vulnerable children and young people on our 16-acre smallholding in Farnham, Surrey. We are recruiting for a reliable, hardworking individual with attention to detail to join our team as an animal caretaker. This role will require working 3 hours on both a Saturday and Sunday morning on an every other week basis- working one weekend on, one weekend off.

The duties include:

  • Carrying out general husbandry tasks for a range of different farm and small animals such as pigs, ponies, goats and guinea pigs.
  • Being confident in lone working with large animals such as ponies, alpacas and goats.
  • Having attention for detail, noticing and reporting changes in behaviour and any concerns regarding the animals health.
  • Being diligent at all times and attending to the varying needs of our 15 different species of animals
  • Some general site maintenance tasks such as sweeping, leaf blowing, weeding etc.
  • Ensuring the site is left in a manner which is tidy, clean and free from health and safety hazards.
  • Supervising Duke of Edinburgh award students in their volunteering with us

Full training will be provided.

The successful candidate will:

  • Be independent and able to work much of the time alone, without other staff on site
  • Be comfortable working outdoors through all seasons and in all weathers, being resilient and safely overcoming any adverse conditions.
  • Be confident working with a range of large animal species such as horses and goats.

Additionally, this post requires the worker to work half of all bank/public holidays, including Christmas, on an alternate basis. The opportunity to work further hours is available for occasional cover shifts on weekends/evenings.

EXPERIENCE: Some experience working with large animals/equines is desirable but not essential

SCHEDULE: 8-11AM on a Saturday and Sunday morning every other week. Working both days one week and having both days off the following week. Additionally, this role requires working half of all UK bank/public holidays, including Christmas. Additional weekend/evening cover work is sometimes available.

CLOSING DATE: 21st May with interviews expected to be week commencing 22nd May.

Please note our site is difficult to access via public transport, therefore this role would suit a local person or somebody with their own transport.
