Job description
As an Environment Officer, you will work closely with businesses to help them comply with their permit and environmental regulations, enforce the law and influence operators to improve their environmental performance.

You will play a critical frontline role protecting the environment whilst working within a team who deal with a wide range of environmental issues from permitted and illegal waste sites to more complex and challenging installation facilities ensuring their activities do not harm people, wildlife or the environment. You will initially focus on regulating waste management facilities. You will work with our team leaders, our technical leaders and our officers to provide an efficient and effective service to all of our customers.

You will carry out inspections and audits of permitted sites and produce written reports capturing the findings. You will sometimes have to take tough action to achieve these aims, and on occasions, need to investigate environmental offences. You may also be required to occasionally give evidence in a court of law. Your work will be vital to the protection of the environment and will be varied, challenging, and rewarding.

Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.
The team
You will be based in our Waste North team which regulates facilities across Lincolnshire.

The team works both indoors and outdoors responding to environmental emergencies and incidents using a standby rota.
Experience/skills required
You may be good at dealing with difficult situations, a new graduate or experienced in regulation. Whatever your background, you will be interested in the environment, making a difference, using environmental regulation and sometimes needing to deal with confrontation.

We are looking for people who enjoy working both outdoors and in an office environment and can show us they are:

  • Organised and able to prioritise.
  • Confident and assertive.
  • IT/computer literate.
  • Passionate about the environment and learning about environmental regulation/ enforcement,
  • Handle confrontational people,
  • Adapt communication styles to suit others,
  • Integrate into a team,
  • Record information correctly,

You will complete a two year development programme and Environment Officer Development Workbook designed to introduce you to your new role and to help develop your capabilities. There will also be a significant amount of training provision including formal classroom learning and self-directed development and training.
Contact and additional information
We have fantastic benefits in addition to a competitive salary. (Further information about the role, salary and benefits can be found in the candidate pack).
