The Position
Reporting to the Vice President for Development and Communications, the Director of Communications and Marketing is responsible for developing and implementing a multi-pronged global communications and marketing strategy that aims to build the Fund’s brand name and visibility, grow a robust constituency of online donors, and shape social justice philanthropy. The Director advances the Fund’s thought leadership and helps to develop content for the Fund’s donor community. The position also provides strategic communications support to the Fund’s leadership, program staff, and grantees.

The Director is responsible for recruiting, onboarding, and managing a team of communications and marketing staff currently based in the UK and US, monitoring and improving the effectiveness of communications and marketing work, and ensuring brand consistency in all internal and external communications products. The Director of Communications and Marketing works closely across all departments and sub-teams to ensure strategic cohesion and provides guidance to the Leadership Team in the areas of communications and marketing.

Essential Duties
  • Develop and implement a global communications and marketing strategy that supports a five-year business plan and furthers programmatic aims
  • Recruit, train, and manage a team of communications and marketing staff currently based in the US and UK
  • Work with each communications and marketing team member to develop and implement sub-strategies (e.g., around social media and digital – including paid – marketing, media outreach and thought leadership, editorial planning and production, donor conversion and cultivation, and strategic communications)
  • Integrate distinct areas of work on the communications and marketing team and manage team-wide initiatives and campaigns
  • Assess workload across the team and support the prioritization of efforts in line with annual strategy, and incoming communications requests
  • Collaborate with other department heads and staff to integrate communications and marketing strategies across the organisation
  • Provide guidance to the Leadership Team on communications and marketing best practice and advise leadership on effective internal communications
  • Ensure consistent messaging and branding, representative of the organisation’s mission and values, across all internal and external channels
  • Oversee a review and editing process to ensure accuracy and brand consistency
  • Build and maintain relationships with external stakeholders including media, agencies, peers, and grassroots activist groups
  • Develop and implement policies, processes, systems, and protocols that guide the communications and marketing team and set standards for all Fund staff
  • Develop and manage an annual budget and oversee team-wide expenses
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of communications and marketing work and the performance of communications and marketing staff
  • Represent the communications and marketing team’s work and needs to staff, the Leadership Team, and the Board.

Minimum Qualifications
  • 8 years of progressively responsible experience working in communications and marketing, including in or with the non-profit sector
  • 4 years of management experience overseeing diverse global teams, including staff, agencies, and external consultants
  • Experience managing complex programs and competing priorities across diverse teams in a global organization
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with a deep understanding of narrative, storytelling, and multimedia content production on global issues
  • Established media connections and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Agency and/or marketing industry experience, particularly involving increasing brand awareness and digital strategies
  • Ability to evaluate initiatives and campaigns, and understanding of return on investment in different communications strategies
  • Experience developing and implementing communications and campaign strategies
  • Ability to advise on effective internal communications
  • Experience working in the philanthropy sector and/or an understanding of global philanthropic trends and best practices
  • Experience working in an international and multilingual environment; fluency in a second language, especially Arabic, French, or Spanish, is strongly preferred.
