Plastic/ Breast surgery fellow

Location –The Harley Street Clinic, Central London , part of HCA Healthcare UK

Contract Type - Permanent, Full time hours, 8-6pm (4 days/ week).

Salary Competitive (dependent on skills and surgical experience)

About the role

The role is clinically predominantly based within The Harley Street Clinic hospital the fellow will have an essential function in assisting the Plastic/ Breast Surgical Consultant in theatres and caring for their patients throughout their hospital admission. Outpatient clinics may also be attended.

The Plastic/Breast surgery Fellow will play a crucial role within the Independent Healthcare Sector. With admitting Consultants working as Independent Practitioners, the hospital requires the presence of the fellow to assist in providing continuous high-quality care to patients, guided by consultants. The Plastic/ Breast Fellow will provide support to a team of highly experienced plastic/ breast surgeons in clinical settings on the inpatient ward, theatres, and outpatients.

The successful candidate will have prior plastic surgical experience, including diagnostic, excisional, reconstructive and oncoplastic procedures such as DIEP flaps, working under the supervision of plastic/ breast surgeons.

Clinical Duties and Responsibilities

  • To provide a high standard of patient care as directed by the Consultant Plastic/ Breast Surgeon. This may include pre-operative assessment, clerking and obtaining consent. Assisting in Theatre under direct supervision, and in the case of an urgent return to theatre distant supervision.
  • To work collaboratively with Consultant Plastic/ Breast Surgeons, Anaesthetists, Theatre Managers, nursing professionals, theatre support staff, ICU staff and members of the multidisciplinary team to provide excellent patient care and maintain a high standard of work and uphold the professional image of HCA Healthcare UK.
  • To thoroughly review patients pre- and post- procedure at Consultant request, including medications, blood tests, liaise with blood bank or ICU as required, dealing with plastic/ breast surgical emergencies and alerting consultant to any issues identified.
  • To carry out a comprehensive handover and maintain regular communications with the admitting consultant for surgical patients designated to their care and maintain high-quality accurate documentation on electronic patient records and any paper notes.
  • To be technically competent and proficient in plastic and micro-surgical techniques to assist and adequately support the Consultant with the range of procedures/techniques required, including opening/closing wounds, to the required standard of the Consultant Plastic/ Breast Surgeon.
  • To work in conjunction with intensive care, supporting the Critical Care team in post-op management as required -e.g. monitoring flap integrity, abdominal donor sites, post-op drains, wound care, pain management and all other tasks as directed by consultant.

Person Specification criteria:

  • MBBS medical qualification
  • MRCS or equivalent
  • Full GMC Registration
  • Intercalated BSc, BA, BMedSci or equivalent
  • Higher Degrees including MSc, PhD, MD etc

Experience:

  • Experience in Surgery within the UK or equivalent international experience
  • ST3 or above trained, or post CCT or equivalent international training level in Plastic surgery.
  • Experience with management of post-op plastic/ micro/ Breast surgery patients on the wards and in the Intensive Care setting, with straight-forward or complicated recovery.
  • Previous experience in a similar role in the NHS/ other healthcare facility
