Position Overview & Specifications
We require a Band 5 HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist for a six-month fixed term position in Cellular Pathology. At least one years’ experience of working in a Cellular Pathology laboratory is essential.
WHO WE ARE:
The department receives over 30,000 specimens per year and undertakes all routine histological procedures including specimen dissection, microtomy, frozen sections, special stains and immunocytochemistry. We are UKAS accredited and registered with the IBMS as a pre and post registration training laboratory.
WHERE WE ARE:
Kettering offers great access to all the beautiful Northamptonshire countryside. It has excellent road and rail network links to and from London, the East Midlands and Birmingham and the hospital is just off the A14 giving easy access to the M1.
WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:
You will work as a Biomedical Scientist in the Cellular Pathology Department and report to the Cellular Pathology Manager. The position is full time (37.5 hrs) working 9.00-17.30. The current working days are Monday to Friday.
We are looking for someone who can work comfortably within a team but also with the skills and confidence to work independently. The post will involve microtomy (30/40 blocks per hour) embedding, special stains, QC checks and data entry. Excellent communication skills both face to face and on the telephone are required. You should be able to work accurately and efficiently demonstrating good organisational skills. The role will be diverse reflecting the nature of the busy Cellular Pathology Department.

1.The preparation of surgical and post mortem specimens for histological examination including:
: Reception and organisation of patient samples, including computerised entry of patient/specimen data
: Processing and embedding of patient tissue blocks
: Microtomy (30-40 blocks per hour) and staining of paraffin wax embedded tissues
2. Quality control of H&E slides including signing out and allocating completed work to pathologists
3. Execution of special techniques as required.
4. Assist in general laboratory duties as required.
5. Dealing with telephone enquiries.
6. Such other duties as may be reasonably required by the Laboratory Manager.
The jobholder is expected to undertake training in order to:
Maintain mandatory training and laboratory competency
It is essential that a high standard of dress and conduct be maintained to the satisfaction of the Laboratory Manager.
