Position Overview & Specifications

This post is for a full time post-CCT Reseach Fellowship in Graft-Versus-Host Disease (GVHD) and Haemopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation within the Department of Haematological Medicine at King’s College Hospital Foundation Trust. This post will focus on GVHD and Haemopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation with a view to enhancing the skills of Transplant Physicians in accordance with FACT-JACIE accreditation standards. This position will be an ideal opportunity to acquire supervised supplementary training in transplantation and management of GVHD following formal specialist training in Haematology and CCT. Appointees will be expected to undertake both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. The appointee must have (or be eligible for) GMC registration and have completed higher specialist training in haematology. A medical degree or diploma from a recognised UK or overseas University or Institution is required. MRCP, MRCPath and CCT (or equivalent) is desirable. Haematology trainees within a training programme who wish to take a year out of training will also be considered for this post if they have adequate initial experience.

The appointment will be initially for a period of 1 year. Any candidate who is unable for personal reasons to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for this post; if such a person is appointed, modification of the job will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust.

The post will have a specific focus on GVHD and Haemopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation with a view to develop and enhance skills and competencies of the candidate in accordance with the FACT-JACIE accreditation standards.

The department has a busy transplant activity and a not neglectable amount of patients develops GVHD despite different GVHD-prophylaxis strategies. The post-holder is expected to work within the transplant and clinical trials team to assist with the post transplant patients affected with GVHD and enrolled in clinical trials.

The post-holder will attend the weekly GVHD ward round and to concur to the update of the GVHD database; the post-holder will focus the research activity on the management of steroid-refractory GVHD. Under the supervision of BMT consultants, the post-holder will evaluate the pathways and outcomes of patients affected with chronic GVHD.

The appointee will take an active role in the day-to-day activities of the transplantation service. The role will include provision of medical support to the multidisciplinary BMT Team as well as outpatient care relevant to Haemopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation.

The appointee is expected to write and deliver research manuscripts regarding GVHD and its treatment. The post holder will be expected to undergo an annual appraisal

Specific responsibilities include:
  • Liaising with ward-based clinical team on the management of patients undergoing transplant and providing support for patients admitted with complications post-therapy
  • GVHD ward round: to evaluate weekly the inpatients according to the modified Glusberg criteria or NIH criteria.
  • Update the GVHD database
  • Review the data of steroid-refractory GVHD patients treated at Kings.
  • Liaising with district general hospitals to assist with transplant and cellular therapy patients
  • Reviewing patients who attend on an emergency basis to the haematology day unit
  • Reviewing patients in the weekly post-transplant clinics
  • Assistance with the nurse-led late effects clinic
In addition, the appointee will be involved with the planning and undertaking of bone marrow harvests, and there will be an opportunity to participate in transplant related clinical trials activity.
