Position Overview & Specifications

Applicants are invited to apply for a new fixed-term role within our clinical genetics service to support consistent management of patients with high risk genes predisposing to cancer.

The successful candidate will join an experienced enthusiastic cancer genetics team. They will be proficient in Excel and will be expected to work autonomously to maintain Excel spreadsheets and patient files as needed. The post holder will have excellent communication skills and will be contacting patients to discuss their on-going management needs, whether cascade testing has been explored and to assess whether further support or follow-up appointments are required. The post holder will also determine if there are any relevant research studies the patient could be recruited to. They will then work with the appropriate clinicians to determine how best to provide this support. The post holder will need to update patient files and spreadsheets as well as write letters as needed. They will need to ensure appropriate reports are obtained and screening is in place. The post holder will be instrumental in transferring spreadsheet data to new computer systems and ensuring the data is secure. They may also support the team with cancer triage.

The role would be well suited for someone who has recently completed or is in the final year of their MSc in genetic / genomic counselling. Other suitable candidates will be considered.

  • Keeping up to date with management guidelines for cancer syndromes
  • Keeping up to date with cancer research studies the department recruits to
  • Reviewing spreadsheets and contacting patients to ensure they have received appointments and are having appropriate surveillance.
  • Referring patients under guidance of cancer genetics team to surveillance programmes, and ensuring referrals are received and patients accepted onto the programmes
  • Updating spreadsheet when new information is received for patients referred for surveillance
  • Supporting and overseeing the movement of spreadsheets to new systems such as Phenotips and Cerner
  • Identify patient eligible for research studies and invite them to take part under the direction of the cancer genetics team.
  • Liaising with genetic counselling, clinical genetics team as well as other healthcare professionals
  • Support the cancer triage team
  • Support the cancer carrier clinic
  • Contribute to service development, audit and research studies
