We are seeking an enthusiastic and highly motivated HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist with a passion for clinical excellence, quality and a drive for career development. Suitable candidates will have Specialist BMS experience, post-registration and experience in performing complex manual, semi-automated and automated assays. Candidates must be in possession of an IBMS specialist portfolio in Clinical Biochemistry or equivalent to be appointed at Band 6 however, candidates working towards their specialist portfolio will be considered for appointment at band 5.

The Newborn Screening laboratory provides one of the largest newborn screening services in the UK and is responsible for screening 55,000 babies per annum for Congenital Hypothyroidism, Sickle cell disease and Cystic fibrosis. Manchester is one of six laboratories participating in an evaluation of newborn screening for Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID), funded by NHS England. This fixed term post is specifically to support this exciting evaluation which uses PCR methodology, adapted for high-throughput screening. The Laboratory is well equipped with two Perkin Elmer GSPs, two BioRad Variant HPLC systems, a Victor Enlite and IDS iSYS and has a dedicated Newborn Screening IT system (Perkin Elmer Screening Center). The laboratory also provides paediatric and specialist endocrinology services for MFT and other Trusts within the North West, for example insulin and c-peptide by manual ELISA. The Newborn Screening Laboratory has a close working relationship with the Willink Laboratory who currently provide the screening service for metabolic disorders screened as part of the National Blood Spot Screening Programme. The Newborn Screening Laboratory and the Willink Laboratory are co-located and share two Xevo TQS Micro tandem mass spectrometers.
