An exceptional opportunity has arisen for a qualified counsellor to join Merchant Taylors’ School, Liverpool. Based in Crosby, our historic school celebrates more than 400 years of educating children of the North West. We have three sites i) Stanfield, our mixed primary school for children aged 4 – 11 ii) Senior Boys aged 11 – 18 and iii) Senior Girls aged 11- 18 all within a few minutes’ walk from each other.

In this role, you will be responsible for providing individual and group counselling to pupils of the School who have been referred by the pastoral team to the counselling service. Reporting into the Assistant Head – Pastoral, you will work closely with other colleagues in the School counselling service, members of the School pastoral team and the School Nurse in order to ensure the wellbeing of pupils is paramount. You will have excellent communication skills and be comfortable in relating to young people. You should also be able to demonstrate that you are experienced in counselling children of school age. An understanding of safeguarding requirements and legislation in schools would also be helpful.

Candidates are strongly encouraged to visit the school website for more information about our thriving school, which offers an exceptionally rich curriculum and strong sense of community www.merchanttaylors.com

The safeguarding responsibilities of the post include:

  • The provision of a safe environment in which children and young people feel heard
  • Being aware of the indicators of abuse and neglect
  • Ensuring vigilance in recognising changes in behaviour or mood
  • Reporting safeguarding concerns in line with the School’s Safeguarding Children and Child Protection Policy
  • Attending Safeguarding training and updates as requested by the School

The post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and the School is therefore permitted to ask job applicants to declare all convictions and cautions on a self-declaration form in advance of attending an interview (including those which are "spent" unless they are "protected" under the DBS filtering rules) in order to assess their suitability to work with children.
