Position Overview & Specifications

Job Title: Intelligence Support Officer

Salary: £28,511 to £30,504 plus a Shift Disturbance allowance of 12.5% and a Location allowance of £1,721. You will receive £28,511 the band minimum. Progress to the band maximum of £30,504 will be via incremental progression.

Job Purpose:

The Specialist Operations Aviation Policing Intelligence Unit acts as a single point of contact for the receipt of intelligence from any source and for incoming intelligence requests. The daily function is also responsible for the preparation of daily documents.

Intelligence Support Officers (ISOs) enable the development of intelligence ensuring it is managed in the correct manner and recorded on the police systems and National Intelligence databases. They will also ensure the information is accessible to all front-line officers and is appropriately shared with partners or other agencies securely, ethically and in line with legal requirements. The role holder will research, evaluate and where required, disseminate intelligence securely, escalate Intelligence to the appropriate person promptly for decision making and further action.

ISOs will create core records ensuring intelligence is appropriately flagged and protected in a timely manner. The role is performed to support operational policing and to ensure that MPS risk, harm or threat is identified and managed effectively.

Work Involves:

  • Reading, evaluating and researching the risk of threat and harm from routine scanning of the intelligence databases, deciding/implementing the most appropriate course of action.
  • Identify and assess threat, risk of harm and opportunity for interventions and to highlight issues to the appropriate department/person promptly for further action to support operations and live-time operations activities.
  • Research and development of intelligence from outside forces and partner agencies.
  • Disseminate intelligence/information, where required, in line with national standards
  • Assessment and tasking of research requests for incidents/investigations.
  • General enquiries and intelligence checks in relation to E-Borders and Deportees.
  • Managing the electronic mailboxes.
  • To create and publish daily briefings using PowerPoint.
  • Undertake a range of administrative activities and providing advice, support and guidance on a number of intelligence IT systems.
  • To undertake in-depth research of information from a variety of internal and external sources in connection with the operational requirements of the Operational Command Unit.
  • To provide a research capability within the intel unit through collating information and intelligence from police databases, MPS departments and other agencies; assisting field

intelligence officers, CID and analysts in research towards various National Intelligence Model products such as target/subject profiles; researching crime and identifying potential patterns and providing support where appropriate to other members of the unit.

Essential For The Role, e.g. qualifications, licenses, languages, training

Essential Criteria:

  • Ideally have previous experience in working within an Intelligence Unit

  • They must be confident in their own ability to interrogate systems as they are likely to be working in an environment where fast time research may be required. Therefore, they must have excellent working knowledge of Word, Excel and Power Point.


  • The ability to identify and extract relevant data from a variety of sources, transferring the information into usable intelligence to support operation objectives. To include to create, assess, supervise and evaluate intelligence and make fast time decisions around development and dissemination and/or to seek assistance for a decision from a supervisor.


  • High level of self-motivation and initiative, ability to work as part of a team and with minimal supervision. Preparedness to undertake additional training.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Understanding of relevant legislation, corporate IT systems and policies appropriate to the role, including Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act, Freedom of Information Act, Management of Police Information, GDPR, National Intelligence Model and related data compliance regulations.
