Assistant Engineer

Our team is known for its extensive in-house expertise and continual drive to innovate within the industry. The Assistant Engineer will provide the Project with accurate, informed interpretation of the specified Project Technical Requirements. Providing support to the Project management and site team on all matters technical whilst providing some management support to the site manager.


Following the ‘One Murphy’ approach, we’re able to deliver all aspects of the projects we work on. J. Murphy & Sons has designed, constructed, and commissioned projects for clients such as National Grid, SSE and Ørsted, on both transmission and distribution networks within the Energy sector.

What you will be doing?

  • Establish and promote best practice in health, safety and environmental matters in conjunction with the SHQE department.
  • Assist senior engineers in the production of civil engineering designs calculations and report documentation.
  • Undertake designer risk assessments.
  • Attend tender site visits and prepare site visit reports.
  • Undertake site visits to inspect works.
  • Assist CAD technicians with the production of drawings.
  • Attend design and hazard review meetings when/where required.
  • Collaborate with other design disciplines to ensure civil engineering designs are well coordinated.
  • Support senior engineers with tracking design programme progress
  • Assist the internal design engineering function in Continuous Improvement initiatives and activities.
  • Supervise and mentor student and summer placement engineers.

Who we are looking for:

  • Bachelor’s Degree/HNC in Civil Engineering
  • Experience on Construction or Civil Engineering projects.
  • Experienced in surveying and setting out techniques
  • Sound understanding of Quality, Safety, Health, Environmental and Sustainability project requirements.
