Biomedical Scientist Specialist

Job Summary

The Microbiology Services Laboratory provides a centralised and diverse microbiological service that is essential to the operation of NHSBT. This vacancy is based in the bacteriology laboratory which is at the forefront of scientific research with a progressive approach and close links with the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), universities and international biomedical companies.

Main duties of the job

  • You will be required to perform, analyse, record and interpret a wide range of specialist / complex bacteriological investigations relating to the issue of results for blood and tissue products
  • You will be responsible for the support and training of new and less experienced staff
  • You will be required to handle blood and tissue samples and operate a range of laboratory analysers and equipment
  • You will be on hand to deal with queries from other departments, medical staff or visitors and to provide specialist bacteriological advice to a range of service users
  • Some Saturday working will be required on a rotational basis

About You

Experience and Knowledge

  • Broad knowledge and experience in the field of bacteriology and bacterial identification gained through previous experience working as a Biomedical Scientist
  • Experience in specialised manual and automated bacteriological laboratory techniques using a wide range of complex equipment
  • Experience in prioritising and issuing work to other staff and monitoring progress to ensure deadlines are met
  • Understanding of UK Accreditation Service (UKAS), Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), Good Laboratory Practice, Clinical Pathology Accreditation and UK Blood Transfusion Service (UKBTS)
  • Experience of working with Information Technology
  • Experience of writing reports, preparing and delivering presentations and training and mentoring staff.

Qualifications and Training

  • Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registered Biomedical Scientist
  • Science graduate with relevant post graduate training in bacteriology and bacterial identification.
  • Evidence of continuous learning and professional development
  • Willingness to undertake further training and development relevant to the post and work of the laboratory
