Position Overview & Specifications

The vacancy

The NHS Race and Health Observatory (‘the Observatory’) is an independent organisation, set up to explore ethnic inequalities in access to healthcare, experiences of healthcare, health outcomes.

As the Assistant Director: Research and Evidence, you will work closely with the Chief Executive to oversee the effective delivery of the Observatory’s work programme. You will be expected to apply project management principles at a senior level across the health system and wider public services.

The role of the Assistant Director: Research and Evidence is to oversee activities including research commissioning, data analysis, and evidence synthesis to support the Observatory’s core ambitions. In this pivotal role, the Assistant Director will bring energy and expertise to bear in the development, execution, and management of research and analytical projects aimed at shining a light on ethnic and racial health inequalities in the UK and beyond.

You will have overall responsibility for the Observatory’s research programme including:

  • Working with research managers across the organisation to ensure that research projects are delivered on time, to budget, and to a publishable standard.
  • Overseeing the development and delivery of the Observatory’s interactive digital platform, an analytical tool designed to put health equity data in the hands of the people delivering and receiving care in the UK.
  • Developing and maintaining key stakeholder relationships internally and externally with relevant colleagues across NHS England and other arm’s length bodies, leader across healthcare, major research funders, and academics and think tanks.
  • Providing dedicated oversight support to the Observatory’s Digital and Data Working Group, by supporting that Group’s chairs in developing agendas, deciding on research priorities, and commissioning research.

About you

  • Have experience in delivering and/or overseeing the delivery of complex healthcare-related research projects and programmes, including at national level
  • Have expert knowledge of quantitative and qualitative health research methods, research commissioning and management, and experience of working with third party organisations delivering research
  • Would like to be part of a cutting-edge organisation that is passionate about supporting healthcare bodies in tackling race inequality
  • Enjoy managing, supporting, developing and leading staff
