Position Overview & Specifications

An exciting opportunity has arisen within NHS Lanarkshire’s Procurement Team for a Trainee Senior Procurement Officer offered at Band 5 Annex 21. The training programme covers a 12-month period. Subject to satisfactory completion of the training programme the post holder will become a Senior Procurement Officer with a permanent contract of employment.

NHS Lanarkshire has an annual trade spend with its suppliers of around £250m with the Procurement & Logistics Department providing a comprehensive procurement and logistics service for all Health Board functions. The Procurement team at Lanarkshire plays an important role in achieving financial sustainability and delivering improved services that will reduce cost and free up revenue and time to extend to front-line care.

This post is an excellent opportunity for a candidate who is educated to HND or degree level (or equivalent qualifications) and is looking to start their career in Procurement. Equally this role would also be suited to candidates who have some practical experience within a procurement, logistics or supply chain role and are looking to enhance their knowledge and progress in their procurement career.

The position is offered at Band 5 Annex 21. The salary scale for the post is £30,229 rising by annual increments to £37,664 per annum. As a trainee your pay is determined as a percentage of pay for qualified staff, in accordance with Annex 21 of the Agenda for Change terms and conditions. As you are more than 1 year from completion of training you will receive 70% of the Band 5, maximum for qualified staff which equates to £26,364 per annum. On completion of your training you will be placed on either the first pay point of the appropriate pay band or the next pay point above your training salary. The training programme is for a minimum of 1 year and is based around a full time 37.5-hour Contract. You will train within the Corporate Procurement Team at NHS Lanarkshire Board Headquarters at Kirklands Hospital. The training programme will be extensive incorporating spend analysis, supplier segmentation, financial savings identification, contract and tender document preparation, interpreting and negotiating contract terms, and building knowledge and skills in the utilisation of modern procurement/sourcing systems.

The successful candidate will work to the Senior Procurement Officer job description with the expectation that they will be support and trained to carry out all of the duties and responsibilities outlined.

Whilst no prior knowledge of public procurement is required your application should demonstrate that you have the ability to work in a methodical, organised manner and that you have strong data analysis, problem solving and IT skills. We are looking for someone who is enthusiastic to learn, develop and obtain the skills required for a successful career in procurement.
