Position Overview & Specifications

We wish to appoint a Senior Clinical Fellow in Emergency Medicine. The post is for 6 – 12 months. The role will consist of 60% of time in the Emergency department, and 40% of the time undertaking specialist interest work Major trauma/QIP.

Full Registration with the GMC is essential. Experience and familiarity with UK hospital systems and practices or equivalent is essential.

The Emergency Medicine part of the post is based at Southmead Hospital in Bristol. This is a regional Major Trauma Centre. It is also a specialist Stroke, Vascular surgery, Urology and Transplant centre.

The post is not educationally approved or recognised by the Royal College for training purposes but is educationally sound and well supported.

Candidates must have GMC registration that allows them to work in posts that are not recognised for training, and will ideally have Royal College Emergency Medicine membership +/- fellowship.

In addition to the above there will be a supplement for out of hours working.

Clinical Experience 80%
This role participates in the registrar rota. The post provides exposure and experience in acute presentations to the ED with rotations through all areas of the department.

Non Clinical 20%

The post includes 20% of non clinical time for research / trauma related activities. Training to develop the Trauma Team Leader qualities and further career progression to work in MTC is provided. With a strong teaching and research base in the department there are plenty of opportunities to
engage and support many ongoing and forthcoming projects in the ED

North Bristol NHS Trust is the largest Trust in the South West region and one of the largest trusts in the country. We provide Medical, Surgical, Neonatal and Maternity Care for the local population of approximately 1 million people in Bristol, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset. We are the Major Trauma Centre for the West Country, house the Regional Stroke Centre providing 24/7 Thrombolysis alongside providing tertiary level care in Neurosciences, Orthopaedics, Pathology, Plastic Surgery and Burns, Renal Medicine, Transplant and Urology,

Per annum, the trust treats over 100,000 inpatients, 35,000 outpatients, 100,000 emergency department patients and help deliver over 6,000 babies. It employs more than 9,500 staff and has approximately 1,050 inpatient beds.

Furthermore, the Trust has University Teaching status and is associated with both the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England. This allows all staff members to actively engage in the teaching of future generations of doctors, nurses, paramedics and many more.

Additional Activities / CV boosting activities
Teaching – The department houses weekly departmental protected teaching time that is primarily consultant-led with options for remote participation via Zoom. Active participation and teaching delivery is encouraged. The department holds regular trainee led/consultant moderated case based learning hosted on social media mapped to the RCEM curriculum. The department prides itself on its use of Simulation to provide valuable lessons to all levels of clinicians; staff are encouraged to get involved in both the scenario delivery and planning. In addition, there is regular formal and informal bedside teaching and the opportunity to deliver teaching to the integrated medical students.

Research – The department has a strong research pedigree with a College Professor and a Research registrar based in the department. The department is currently involved in multiple research projects to
include national clinical trials such as the UK-REBOA trials. The department encourages and welcomes involvement in research projects from all levels of practitioners.

Clinical Governance & Audit – alongside research, the department encourages involvement and proactivity in departmental audits. Independent ideas for departmental audits are encouraged or
audits can be chosen via the audit lead. Clinical Link Roles – the department adopts clinical link roles whereby junior doctors are linked to a
consultant lead on a multitude of different topics, such as major incident management, paediatrics, anaesthetics and mental health.

Staffing
The shop-floor is Consultant-led from 8am to midnight 7 days per week, with a resident Consultant for Major Trauma 24/7. There is 24/7 middle grade cover in the department
