Based: The Link Centre, 140 Union Street, Oldham, OL1 1DZ

Role Overview:


Oldham Council is seeking to recruit a qualified (or nearing qualification) Rehabilitation Officer Visual Impairment to join their established Sensory Team. This role is crucial to the ongoing development and delivery of services and support to the residents of Oldham who are experiencing sight loss. You will undertake specialist assessments, including risk assessments of individuals and their Carers, to identify need due to their sensory loss, and determine eligibility for support

Key Responsibilities:
  • To undertake specialist visual impairment assessments, with the visually impaired person, to identify their needs and aspirations to promote independent living.
  • You will work in partnership with service users and carers to produce support plans, taking a strengths based approach; and monitor and review its effectiveness.
  • To provide specialist support to other council services including, community integrated clusters, Learning Disability and Autism, Mental Health and hospital discharge.
  • To maintain the register for sight impaired and severely sight impaired residents
  • Ability to deliver Sensory Awareness Training to a range of professionals and providers
  • To identify and take account of community networks, and place based assets which may assist in meeting the needs of individuals and carers referred for an assessment
Key Requirements:
  • Knowledge of the relevant legislation, codes of practice, National Guidelines and Government initiatives connected with service delivery in this field of work
  • Knowledge of sensory loss, particularly the impact on physical, emotional, social, psychological and mental health wellbeing
  • Ability to advocate for visually impaired people and the organisation to help promote accessible services; equality; social integration and understanding of the impact of sight loss
  • Ability to liaise with Equipment provider companies and purchase using best value principles.
