Systems Engineer Internship Summer 2023

We are looking for a Systems Engineering Intern to help us scale our next-generation laser processing platform.

Opsydia is transforming security and traceability in the diamond gemstone industry with its precision laser technology. Our first deployed products utilise optical techniques to write internal IDs inside diamonds, supporting traceability initiatives for ethical supply chains.

Our technology also provides a platform for next-generation functional devices in diamond. In the research and development stage it has a number of potential disruptive applications, from quantum devices to chemical and magnetic sensors.

THE ROLE

Opsydia’s technology integrates a number of hardware components requiring coordinated control to perform the precision laser process. In the Dx000 series, bespoke software abstracts the complex control requirement and guides an operator through a repeatable process by using machine vision and other automation techniques. However, to develop new innovative processes, engineers need fine control and manual configuration of several parameters across components.

In this project, you will work with the Systems team to help develop tools to improve experimental methods for laser processing on Opsydia’s R&D optical benches. You will build a good understanding of how to control and interface hardware components (e.g. femtosecond laser, high precision stages, scientific camera) and design useful workflows for core experiments. You will also have the opportunity to work with the Software team to build software that could execute the identified workflows, enhancing the capabilities of the R&D systems.

You will be expected to work either on your own or as part of a small team, under the supervision of Opsydia staff. You will need to communicate with other members of Opsydia staff to gather requirements to inform the project specification. You will have the opportunity to take responsibility for the project, attend project meetings, and will be expected to regularly present your work.

In particular you will:-

• Learn how to use Opsydia’s precision laser systems
• Drive individual hardware components to run experiments
• Generate modular experimental workflows to improve R&D processes
• Interface with the software team to build useful development tool

ABOUT YOU

The ideal candidate for this role is close to graduation or has graduated with a degree in a technical field. Hands-on experience with standard physics laboratory equipment is essential and exposure to a fast-paced startup environment would be very valuable.

You will be able to demonstrate that you have the following:-

• Confidence designing and executing experiments using laboratory equipment
• Some experience with software-controlled hardware or hobbyist electronics (e.g. 3D printer, arduino, microcontrollers)
• Communications skills to effectively work in a small collaborative team

You may also have:-

• Experience using a scripting language, e.g. Python
• Enthusiasm for design & user experience
• Familiarity with software control of hardware

This is an 8 week full-time internship position. The intern will work from our offices in Begbroke but there is the opportunity of hybrid/flexible working when appropriate.

Date of placement: July-September (flexible)

As part of the recruitment process a selected candidate will be required to undergo security screening to BS7858.
