Position Overview & Specifications

Join us as a Social Worker Degree Apprentice and progress your career by becoming a degree qualified Social Worker, a role where you can make a difference working with adults, children, carers and families and support positive change in people's lives.

This role will be based in the CAMHS service that provide mental health assessment and intervention to children and young people aged 0-18 years. The service covers BANES, Swindon and Wiltshire and the exact location of the role will be discussed prior to interview. As an apprentice you would have a ‘host team’ but spend time across the other teams to gain a broader experience of the different interventions that can be offered to this service user group. You would be part of an experienced and thriving group of multi-disciplinary professionals in our service.

What you will be doing:
The apprenticeship is taught by experienced social workers in a highly supportive environment, their experience spanning the range of social work specialities: children, families and young people; adults; conflict in communities; mental health and social work law. The research interests of the team include the use of virtual reality and simulations in social work education, working with older people, young carers, and the changing landscape of social work education. Lecturers bring practice experience and real life situations to the classroom.
  • You will develop the ability to consistently exercise professional autonomy and initiative in decision making.
  • You’ll learn how to develop the ability to critically reflect upon performance, take responsibility for modifying future practice in light of new insights gained, and apply knowledge, values and skills.
  • You will an opportunity to explore people and relationships, attachment and separation-loss theories, as well as human development from childhood to old age.
  • In addition, you will explore social oppression and advocacy, developing skills in anti-oppressive practice to ensure they get the best results for those they work with.
Th Melksham CAMHS team is a supportive team with a particular focus on clinicians wellbeing. We understand that working in CAMHS can be challenging and therefore strive to ensure that clinicians are well supported. Teams managers work alongside clinicians to ensure that individual job plans are created to support clinicians in managing their workloads. We ensure that we celebrate our successes and acknowledge the hard work we do to support children and young people and families. There is a strong sense of team work and morale is very good as a result.

Within the service there are fantastic opportunities to develop clinical skills through training at different levels and additional interested and career opportunities are considered and encouraged as part of being a valued member of the team.

BSW CAMHS has a professional lead for social work who considers the pathway for social workers within CAMHS, acts an advocate and incorporates new social work developments into the service.

What we need from you:
  • You must be employed for a minimum of 30 hours per week, which will allow you to spend 20% of your time studying and working on your personal development.
  • You must hold a minimum qualification in GCSEs/ Functional skills level 2 in English and Maths at grade C or 4 and above. We will ask successful interview applicants for proof of certificates prior to interviews.
  • You should have 2x A-levels in any subject.
  • Understanding of the scope of the role of the social worker in context of the team and the organisation, and how the role may contribute to service development
  • Experience of having worked in a clinical or social care setting
  • You must have a valid full driving licence and have access to a vehicle.
You must be available for interview on the 5th June 2023

Please note it will be a requirement of employment that an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks for both Child and Adults are obtained for this apprenticeship.
