Position Overview & Specifications

Applications are invited for a Clinical Fellowship programme embedded within a well-established, innovative and national leading ambulatory medicine department. The applicant would be one of a team of ten ambulatory fellows working in a well-resourced unit lead by a team of 18 consultants and a large experienced multidisciplinary team. This is an exciting opportunity for an energetic, forward thinking trainee who wishes to develop higher level clinical skills in a university teaching hospital and take full advantage of the links held with other Oxford institutions. The role would involve a mixture of banded clinical practise but also has two non-clinical days per week set aside where the candidate would be expected to gain experience in leadership, quality improvement, research, teaching and point of care ultrasound.

The post is aimed at senior medical doctors in training (ST3) and is designed around the needs of the modern medical registrar. It can be performed Out of Programme

Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (OUH)

OUH is one of the largest NHS teaching trusts in the UK and a renowned centre of clinical excellence. Each year, OUH has over one million patient contacts including nearly 100,000 emergency admissions. The Trust has a strong collaboration with the University of Oxford, which underpins the quality of care that is provided to patients, from the delivery of high-quality research - bringing innovation from the laboratory bench to the bedside - to the delivery of high-quality education and training for doctors.

OUH delivers acute emergency care on two of its four hospital sites (the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford and the Horton General Hospital in Banbury), supports the urgent care pathway across distributed community settings, and is working towards comprehensive application of the Future Hospitals Commission principles.

Successful applicants will develop a job plan in conjunction with a senior Fellowship supervisor which will compose:

60% (0.6WTE) Clinical Work: to include acute ambulatory care in the Ambulatory Assessment Unit, and subject to discussion with supervisor may involve activity in other acute and ambulatory medicine settings in the Trust

40% (0.4WTE) Leadership and Management Portfolio: to be decided in conjunction with supervisor according to applicant interests. Should include:
1. Quality Improvement Methodology and Training1. Using OUH Quality Improvement toolkit
2. In-house QI development programme with support in project design, data, change management and sustainability.
3. Engagement wider multidisciplinary team in QI work
4. Presentation of projects at the OUH QI forum
2. A structured project relevant to ambulatory and acute medicine. The project will be developed in collaboration with Fellowship supervisors, with the successful applicant leading on project delivery. The project will be expected to be substantially delivered within the time period of the Fellowship, and submitted for dissemination at Trust, regional and/or national level.
3. Completion of a formal qualification chosen in conjunction with Fellowship supervisor. Formal qualifications offered by partner institutions are encouraged though those provided by other organisations will be considered. The Fellowship will fund part or all of the qualification.
4. Training in point of care ultrasound will be available and participation in this training is encouraged
5. A number of portfolio research projects are run out of the ambulatory unit and the candidates would be expected to actively recruit patients to these studies as well as encouraged to take on a role of assistant principle investigator on one study. Further opportunities to undertake other research of the applicants choice in the department would be supported and encouraged.

Alongside their own project portfolio successful applicants will be expected to complement the other Fellowship programmes in research, education, innovation, digital health and informatics. Dedicated opportunities to participate in other departmental, divisional and executive processes will be available and encouraged. Support will be given from the consultant body as well as from key leaders within the Trust.
