Position Overview & Specifications

A rare and exciting opportunity has arisen for a creative, curious and highly organised individual to join the Penguin Press team as an Editorial Assistant on a permanent basis.

About Penguin Press

Press is also home to the world-famous Penguin Classics library.

The opportunity

As Editorial Assistant, you will report to the Publishing Director and will be responsible for providing daily administrative and editorial support to help facilitate the smooth running of the department. You will have a wide range of duties such as:

  • Assisting the Publishing Director with the internal book process on specified books; for example, briefing maps, co-ordinating illustrations, drafting cover copy, proofreading and populating Title Information sheets
  • Liaising with departments across the business, including Publicity, Marketing, Production, Sales and Rights
  • Acting as a point of contact for authors and agents, answering questions where possible and escalating other queries where appropriate
  • Organising mail outs to authors, agents and for endorsements
  • Managing title metadata and monitoring online retailer feeds
  • Managing the Publishing Director’s diary, including arranging appointments and organising schedules; for example, book fairs and trips
  • Preparing agendas and taking/circulating minutes for meetings
  • Processing expenses and invoices, booking meeting rooms, and sorting post

What you’ll bring

The role will be best suited to someone who has a keen attention to detail and the ability to work on a variety of projects and tasks simultaneously. You will be proactive in your approach to work and will be able to keep things moving in a timely manner to meet deadlines in this fast-paced environment.

You don’t need to have previous publishing experience to be considered, but you do need to be an avid reader of quality non-fiction, and an interest in the books published by Press. You will need to have strong administrative and organisational skills, be hard-working, capable of taking initiative and show real ambition to develop a career in publishing. You will need to possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills as you will be working closely with authors and agents.

How to apply
Please apply with your CV and Cover Letter by 23:59 on Monday 10th April.

As part of your application, we’d like you to respond to the following question in your Cover Letter (no more than 300 words):

  • Please tell us about a recently published non-fiction book that you would recommend, and why.

What you can expect from us:

Salary: You’ll start on £26,500. Expect a £1,000 increase on your first anniversary in this role to reflect your growing contribution.

PRH is currently experimenting with hybrid working and involving colleagues across the business to shape our future ways of working. The needs of our teams and individuals are different, so we’re not taking a one-size-fits-all approach. While our offices are places to connect, collaborate and celebrate with colleagues, we recognise that flexibility about where you work is just as important for doing your best work and for your wellbeing. For this role, there are regular meetings occurring on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday that you will need to attend in person, mainly at our office in Pimlico.

Our employees are the heart of our business. We have a range of benefits to reflect our commitment to our employees, some of which are:

  • 27 days paid holiday entitlement in year one (plus bank holidays), increasing a day each year up to 30 days
  • Medical cover
  • Life assurance
  • Cycle to Work scheme
  • Discounted gym membership
  • Generous pension scheme
  • Summer working hours (role dependent)
  • Volunteering policy and charity matching
  • Employee Assistance programme
  • Mentoring programme
  • Extended gender neutral parental leave
  • Access to books and eBooks across Penguin Random House UK
  • Each site has trained mental health first aiders
  • We plant a tree for every new employee to our business

Our creativity is inspired by different perspectives, so we want our culture to be one of belonging, where everyone feels welcome and where differences are celebrated.

As a Disability Confident Committed organisation, we're part of the offer an interview scheme. This is where disabled applicants who meet the essential criteria for the role can opt in to get to the next recruitment stage. There may be some situations where volume of applicants means we can't take all eligible candidates to interview.

We want to make sure disabled applicants can be their best at each step of the recruitment journey. If you need adjustments during the application process, we encourage you to get in touch with us at http://PRHCareersUK@penguinrandomhouse.co.uk. Remember, you only need to share what you are comfortable to for us to support your adjustment request.
