Executive Publisher, Life Science Journals
About the Role
We are looking for a bright and enthusiastic individual to manage and develop a portfolio of molecular biology journals within the Life Sciences Journals team. As an Executive Publisher you develop the strategy, help develop goals and monitor the progress within your portfolio of society and proprietary molecular biology journals and related products and services, on a highly complex level. The Executive Publisher plays an instrumental role in developing and maintaining a network of relevant key decision makers within the research area. They also participate and/or lead exciting and creative projects that are run across our business.
As Executive Publisher you have a proven track record of demonstrating the ability to work independently and you are a lead example to and a coach/mentor for Senior Publishers, Publishers, and Associate Publishers. You play an instrumental role in championing a positive team spirit. You also have an ambassadorial role to work effectively with multiple stakeholders within STMJ and the wider Elsevier organization.
The role reports to the Publishing Director and can be based in the following office locations: Oxford, London, Amsterdam or US ( Philadelphia or Cambridge, MA). Please note you must already have a permit to work in one of these locations.
Main Responsibilities
  • Portfolio Management and Development. You will balance maintaining the good performance of a journal portfolio with supporting goals around accelerated growth of content, particularly content in molecular biology and related scientific disciplines.
  • Relationship Management and Networking. You will build strong, trust-based relationships and networks in the molecular biology community and use our insights and data to deeply understand the community’s needs.
  • Innovation. You will continually assess developments in molecular biology, author needs and competitor activity and bring insights back to Elsevier to support innovation around portfolio strategies and optimizing performance.
  • Business Development. You will renew existing partnerships and develop new society business opportunities resulting from ongoing outreach activities and strategic input from the Society Business Development team.
  • People Management. You will lead a team of editorial staff responsible for delivering on content and quality growth targets in select journals across the life sciences.
Requirements
  • 7+ years of relevant STM publishing experience, including experience with high-profile society relationship management.
  • Academic degree/PhD in the Life Sciences is not essential but an advantage.
  • Excellent networking and communication skills.
  • Data-driven mindset and a keen interest in new online developments.
  • Financial and commercial awareness, with strategic awareness and eye for business development.
  • Ability to work efficiently and productively with colleagues and customers at different levels, in different locations, and from different cultures.
  • Strong can-do attitude and team-oriented approach are essential for success in this role.
  • Keen interest in developing, coaching, and mentoring direct reports.
