Job description

Eye Health Information Assistant

Home based

28 hours per week

£23,920 per year (£29,900 full time equivalent)

We're at an exciting point in RNIB’s journey and are looking for talented people - who share our values - to join us and make a real difference for blind and partially sighted people.

About the role:

We’re looking for an individual who is enthusiastic and knowledgeable about eye health, and has experience of working in eye care or eye health.

The Eye Health Information Service provides support to people who have concerns about their eye health via a telephone and email helpline, and by providing good quality written and digital resources on eye conditions. The team is part of the Telephone and Digital Services provided by RNIB.

We actively encourage applicants with lived experience of sight loss to apply for this role.

With up-to-date knowledge on eye conditions and treatments, you’ll be supporting people who have questions about their eye health or the eye health of someone they look after. You’ll be speaking to people over the phone and via email, answering enquiries that come into the team from people looking for information about their eye condition or eye health. You’ll be able to explain medical information in simple language, use your communication skills to do this effectively and empathise, being aware of the wider issues surrounding sight loss – referring to other teams appropriately. The role is fulfilling and rewarding as you are supported by your colleagues to provide information, reassurance and support to people when they need it most.

The role also involves developing and writing eye health information and providing training, support and information to wider RNIB teams. You’ll also have the opportunity to represent RNIB at conferences and exhibitions, connecting with health professionals and promoting RNIB services.

To be successful in this role, you will

  • Have experience of working in eye care or eye health, as an eye health professional.
  • Be comfortable with talking to people about complex medical information on the phone or via email.
  • Have experience of working with vulnerable people
  • Understand how to make information accessible.
  • Understand what impact sight loss can have on people and how to support them.
  • Be able to show empathy and use a range of communication techniques and active listening techniques.

You may have experience working with people in a clinical setting, teaching roles within eye health, or working with vulnerable adults.

In return we can offer you:

RNIB Prides itself on being a great place to work with a range of flexible benefits and a positive, progressive culture. We offer a competitive salary, a stimulating and supportive working environment, a flexible work life balance environment, as well as a benefits package including:

  • 26 days holiday per year (plus bank holidays – pro rata), which increase with service, plus one Grace day per year.
  • Excellent pension scheme
  • RNIB Rewards - Our employee discounts platform gives you access to offers at over 800 in-store and online retailers
  • In-house training and development opportunities, including apprenticeships and management development programmes
  • Flexible working arrangements - Each new member of staff will be given a laptop to make working flexibly easy

How to Apply

If you'd like to apply for this great opportunity, please apply online, uploading your CV and cover letter, telling us how you meet the skills, knowledge and experience for the role and why you think you’d be a great fit for RNIB.

If you are having trouble applying online, please contact us on recruitment@rnib.org.uk, or call us on 0207 391 2111.

We do reserve the right to close this role early in the event of a high number of applications.
