Position Overview & Specifications

A new and exciting opportunity has arisen for a Pastoral Support Worker to work within our expanding Risk, Governance and Education Team for maternity services at Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS (SWBH) Trust.

Do you have the skills and experience to provide a high level of specialised training and lead this role? If you feel you would like to be part of taking our service forward, then this could be the opportunity for you and we would really like to hear from you.

As this is a new role there will be an opportunity to bring your passion and experience in maternity to help shape and grow our evolving service.

We would welcome applications from candidates who do not hold the Level 5 Assistant Practitioner (Health) qualification, as this could be offered during your employment

The primary role of the Pastoral Support Worker is to support staff who are undertaking the Maternity Support Worker apprenticeship. The successful candidate will be required to work as part of a team but also autonomously managing their own diary. This will ensure safe provision of care for our women and families. The post-holder will provide leadership within the MSW team and nurture our culture of supportive learning.

The post-holder will be expected to:
  • To facilitate the implementation of pastoral support for staff employed by the Trust and facilitate the development of employment support skills in managers and teams.
  • To role model compassionate and inclusive leadership in order to shape the creation of a collective leadership culture within the Trust.
  • To provide and/or facilitate individual support, and mentorship within the scope of personal and social responsibility, employment skills and social welfare situations.
  • To support the Education Team to ensure the provision and co-ordination of efficient and effective support for the service on a Trustwide basis.
Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust (SWBT) is an integrated care organisation with a budget of approximately £600 million and over 7,000 staff. Diversity and social care is at the core of what we do. The Trust provides Community and Acute Services to over half a million people in an urban centre that demands massive regeneration and has substantial premature mortality.

Our new acute hospital, the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH), opens in 2024 and will provide care to our local population from first class, purpose-built premises. As a result, the base of this role may change to MMUH from 2024 (or beyond). If this is applicable to your role, you will be informed during the recruitment process and continuing your application with this understanding. The development of the new hospital will play an important role in the regeneration of the wider area and in improving the lives of local people and reducing health inequalities.

We have three newly emerging strategic objectives:
1. Our People - to cultivate and sustain happy, productive and engaged staff
2. Our Patients - to be good or outstanding in everything we do
3. Our Population - to work seamlessly with our partners to improve live

Here at SWBH we pride ourselves on the way we support and nurture our colleagues and how we value progression. We are a friendly team, serving a demographically varied population. We currently care for approximately 6000 births every year and are proud of our multidisciplinary approach.

The CQC has rated our maternity services are rated as "Good" (July 2021).
