Mortuary Support Officer

The Medico-Legal Centre is situated at Watery Street, near Shalesmoor/Kelham Island. It is purpose-built to provide facilities and services required for the investigation of sudden or unexpected death. It comprises the public mortuary, offices, and courts of HM Coroner for South Yorkshire (West) jurisdiction, which covers Sheffield and Barnsley. This service is run by a mixture of local authority, South Yorkshire Police, and judicial staff.

The Centre provides a high standard of service to the bereaved and is recognised as a model of good practice in this field of work. Everyone working at the Medico-Legal Centre is committed to dealing with the technical and legal side of the investigation of sudden death in a professional, dignified, and sympathetic manner.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Mortuary Support officer to join the team of technicians at the Medico Legal Centre public Sheffield. The mortuary is licenced under the HTA (Human tissue act) Codes of practice. We care for over 2000 deceased a year from all types of faiths: Note, due to the nature of our work some can be very distressing.

The purpose of this post is to support the effective running of all areas outside of the PM rooms to ensure a safe, secure, effective mortuary service that involves regular duties of body registration and release procedures, identification and viewing of the deceased, liaising with recently bereaved. Preparing, and checking the deceased. Updating computer records and maintain a high standard of cleaning and disinfecting of the mortuary.

We work closely with the coroner, officers, police, doctors, crime scene investigators and funeral directors. We were the first in the country to have a digital scanner as part of our service, which we are now able to offer to other jurisdictions.

Our Service puts a great deal of importance on education and training throughout the careers of all organisations. The successful candidate will have access to Training for professional development to progress into an Anatomical Pathology Technician.

The department opens Monday to Friday with 6am to 4pm rotas in place to cover this. Bank holidays are rotated between staff. Flexibility is a key requirement.

Applications are invited from self-motivated candidates who have excellent organisational and communication skills with the ability to manage and prioritise their own workload, show empathy, be able to work under pressure and be conscious of their own wellbeing. UK mortuary experience would be preferred but not essential.

Please read the job description and person specification for this post carefully before completing your application and if you would like to find out more about the post please make enquiries with Maxine Coe (Mortuary Manager) on 0114 29030024 or email: maxine.coe@sheffield.gov.uk.

Under the Disability Confident Scheme, disabled applicants, who meet the essential criteria of this job, are guaranteed an interview.

Full-time employees work 37 hours for 52 weeks of the year and we offer a generous holiday entitlement. We are open to discussions about a wide range of flexible working opportunities which benefit you and the Council, including reduced hour contracts, working part time or as a job share.
