Position Overview & Specifications

We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Specialist Biomedical Scientist in the Department of Histopathology at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHSFT.

You must hold the IBMS Specialist Diploma in Cellular Pathology (or demonstrate equivalence) to qualify for this post at AFC B6. We welcome applicants with an IBMS Accredited Biomedical Science degree or equivalent to develop into a Specialist BMS. If you have HCPC registration and are working towards the Specialist Diploma in Cell Path you will be paid at AFC B5. Without HCPC registration, you will be paid at Annex 21 AFC B5 as a Trainee BMS until you complete the IBMS registration portfolio. Completion of both registration and Specialist Diploma qualifications is expected to take no more than 3 years.

The post will mainly be based at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital with rotation to the Northern General Hospital Satellite Laboratory once fully trained.

There may be a requirement to rotate to the Chesterfield site lab if the service requires.

Participation in the laboratory Mon-Fri 8am - 8pm working arrangements, weekend and bank holiday rotas when rolled out is expected of all staff.

Duties of the job will depend on the qualifications of the candidate and whether they are recruited at Trainee, BMS or Specialist BMS level. Please review the Job description for each grade of staff as applicable.

The department offers a rapid intra-operative frozen section service. Other intra-operative procedures include:

OSNA (One Step Nucleic acid Amplification) for molecular analysis of breast sentinel nodes.

Moh’s Micrographic Surgery for facial/ recurrent skin cancer treatment, and to ensure complete removal of the lesion with minimal loss of surrounding tissue.

Laboratory Medicine provides a comprehensive diagnostic service to Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and the surrounding community. The Histopathology Department is based on three sites (the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, the Northern General Hospital and the Chesterfield Royal Hospital), processing 80,000 requests per year. It offers excellent training in all aspects of cellular pathology technique in a supportive environment. The department provides a first class diagnostic service and makes significant contributions to teaching and research.

The STH Histopathology diagnostic service includes expertise in:

Acute renal disease pathology; renal, cardiac & lung transplant pathology; metabolic bone disease studies; dermatopathology; breast, gynaecology, endocrine, cardiothoracic, orthopaedic, genito-urinary & gastro-intestinal pathology, oncology and neuropathology. The department is a National Specialist Centre for Ophthalmic Pathology & provides diagnostic service to the Sheffield Breast Screening programme.
