Position Overview & Specifications

About us

Big Life is in the business of changing lives. We fight inequality by working with people and places to create opportunities and inspire change. The Big Life group works to develop partnerships with communities, decision-makers, and services to widen opportunities, grow local assets and build resilience.

Our services work with people on all areas of their life and help them with the things that matter most to them, working with them to remove all the obstacles to changing their life for the better. We help people see the skills and support they already have so they can build on it. This is known as working in the Big Life Way.

What you’ll be doing

As an HR Assistant, you will focus on ensuring staff have a great experience by providing first-class customer service. You’ll be a whizz at using our HR system, calculating pay and holidays, and will be responsible for answering queries at the first call. You will be working with HR Officers and an HR Manager who will support you to make sure managers have the information and resources to be great at managing their people.

What we need from you

  • Good knowledge and experience with databases and systems.
  • Be confident in your maths skills to be able to calculate annual leave and payroll accurately.
  • A real desire to progress within HR. Although it’s beneficial to have an HR qualification, it’s more important that you are passionate about providing a first-class service.
  • A keen eye for detail, and the ability to identify initiatives that will drive the people experience.
  • Good time management and organisational skills relating to the overall number of queries answered, while prioritising tasks in accordance with the payroll deadline.
  • Able to build a natural rapport with people of all different backgrounds and abilities.
  • Enthusiasm, confidence and pride in your work.

What we will offer you in return

  • A permanent, full-time contract with an annual salary of £22,777 in accordance with NJC pay point 8.
  • You’ll be based in our Manchester office, but will usually work from home.
  • 25 days holiday, and 30 once you've been here five years, plus your birthday off.
  • A relaxed culture where you are expected to plan your own day, take breaks when you need them, and enjoy your work.
  • Ongoing personal and professional development through regular supervision.
  • A supportive, flexible approach to managing staff health and wellbeing, including a wide range of perks, schemes and support.
