The Vacancy

The Royal Academy of Arts is delighted to be partnering with Genesis Foundation to deliver our newly developed two-year Genesis Future Curators programme. We have two positions available on the programme, both of which will provide a unique and valuable opportunity to gain a 360 view of the life of a Curator at the RA, in addition to broader insights of the inner workings of our organisation.

Genesis Future Curator – Exhibitions

This opportunity sits with our Exhibitions Team, who look after a range of activities from planning and curating our world class exhibitions, to the installation and de-installation of the artworks themselves.

On a day-to-day basis, you will work alongside the team on projects within a specific portfolio. Given the nature of the work of the department, these will encompass exhibitions at varying stages of development including the culmination of every project and the installation period. Projects scheduled include a major survey exhibition of Marina Abramović and an exploration of the time that the founding Royal Academician Angelica Kauffman spent living and working in London.

To be considered for this opportunity, you will have gained experience completing an arts related degree and have a keen appetite for learning. Excellent communication skills are key as is fluency in written English and the ability to craft and edit well written and compelling text. You will also possess razor sharp attention to detail, great organisation skills and have the ability to self-motivate and work well under pressure.

We will develop a cohesive training and skills development programme for this position so that at the point of completing the programme, you will have fostered the knowledge and skills for a long and successful career in the arts.

The Company

The RA dates way back to 1768 when a group of artists and architects persuaded King George lll to help them to ‘establish a society for promoting the Art of Design'. The original academy, in Pall Mall, was less than 10 meters long. Since then, there have been many changes, though the RA’s core purpose of bringing art and design to a broad audience and championing art and artists still holds true.

Today we are a contemporary art organisation hosting internationally acclaimed exhibitions and through investment in employee training and development, with courses such as Unconscious Bias, LGBTQ+ Awareness, Bystander, and Mental Health First Aid training, we are striving to foster a safe space for everyone through positive action. We also have Employee Network Groups, Ways In Groups, and an Employee Council so every employee has a voice and a way to feel heard by colleagues through the CEO.

The RA is truly a unique place, both as an attraction to our visitors, but also as a workplace. Our people are at the heart of all we do, and we support a broad and inspiring mix of departments; from exhibitions, curators, art handlers, researchers, publishers, and digital to schools and education, visitor welcome, fundraisers, and corporate support.
