Position Overview & Specifications
Diagnostic work includes examination of cerebrospinal fluid, peritoneal dialysis fluid, urine, faeces, sputum, blood/serum, pus and diverse secretions. Investigations include for example, serological assays for HIV and Hepatitis B, identification of micro-organisms, lice, fleas and films for identification of intestinal parasites.
Evidence of successful completion of the IBMS Specialist Portfolio would result in the offer of a Specialist Biomedical Scientist, Band 6, position.
To undertake manual, semi-automated and fully automated laboratory investigations.
To follow the standard operating procedures and to participate in their regular review and update.
To undertake routine operative maintenance on laboratory instruments and have the ability to trouble shoot where necessary.
To plan and organise their work within the demands of the team.
To undertake technical validation of the complex results from laboratory investigations ensuring accuracy and precision as specified by laboratory protocols.
To communicate patient results by telephone to the requesting doctor /healthcare professional
To measure and monitor the accuracy and precision of laboratory investigations using appropriate quality control procedures.
To carry out corrective action when the quality control procedures indicate loss of performance.
To report any instance or event which may cause a service delivery failure to the appropriate person.
To use interpretive skills to determine the pathogenic and clinical significance of results of laboratory tests, for example -
Preparing, examining and reporting on microscopic examination of specimens
Deciding which tests or procedures are necessary to identify pathogenic microbes
Performing and interpreting molecular diagnostic tests
