Position Overview & Specifications

We have an exciting opportunity to appoint researchers (at Research Associate or Research Fellow level) to develop their career whilst conducting important dementia research. You will join the Healthy Ageing Research Theme within the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration for Greater Manchester (NIHR ARC-GM), based at the University of Manchester.

NIHR ARC-GM has received additional funding from the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) and the Alzheimer’s Society to support the building of research capacity and capability in dementia. We seek researchers interested in developing work either in the area of end of life care and dementia; or activity promotion and dementia prevention; or deconditioning in hospital in people living with dementia.

Applications are encouraged from individuals with a wide range of backgrounds, experience of different settings and from disciplines, including but not limited to, healthcare professionals, primary care, public health, social care, gerontology, social sciences and health research methodologists.

You will work with Chris Todd, Professor of Primary Care and Community Health and Emma Vardy, Consultant Geriatrician and MAHSC Honorary Clinical Chair as well as other members of the Healthy Ageing Research Theme and across the wider ARC. You will be based in the in the School of Health Sciences within the Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health. This is a full-time, hybrid working post with an office base at the University of Manchester campus on Oxford Road. NHS secondments can be considered with agreement from the employing organisation.

You will hold a PhD or equivalent in a relevant subject area and have an interest in and emerging track record of excellence in health and social care research and/or research on care ethics/aesthetics. You will have experience of using quantitative, qualitative research or mixed methods, critical appraisal and evidence synthesis in literature reviewing and proven research productivity. Excellent communication and organisational skills are essential, as is the ability to work well both in a team and using your own initiative. The capacity to develop productive working relationships with external stakeholders in the health and care sector is also essential.
