The A Side: A Day in The Life

Since Chris Blackwell first started Island Records in Jamaica in 1959, it has remained one of the world’s most legendary record labels and a coveted destination for new and established artists across genres. Its unique ethos has provided the platform for launching some of the biggest and most influential artists across the musical spectrum, including Bob Marley, U2, Grace Jones, Cat Stevens, Amy Winehouse, Florence & The Machine, Mumford & Sons, Catfish & The Bottlemen, Dermot Kennedy, Sigrid, Sean Paul, M Huncho, MEDUZA, Jamie Cullum, The Specials and Ben Howard. More recent additions to the UK roster include FLO, Arrdee, Nia Archives, Unknown T, easylife, The Lathums and Lola Young. The B Side: Skills & Experience
Summary of the Data Analyst role:

Working within the Streaming team, this is an exciting new role with a focus on Data Analysis of the Streaming landscape, along with optimising the growth of our artists’ audiences. There will also be a requirement to relate consumption trends to forecast artist and track performance for Finance and Forecasting purposes.

Main Duties & Role Overview:

  • Island requires deep, regular, unprompted analysis of not just our own repertoire but wider market trends and competitor release performance.
  • Be able to receive tasks and briefs from the rest of the team and action in a timely manner.
  • Pro-actively educate the label on trends, as well as working on long-term pieces of Analysis.
  • The format and timeliness when presenting data and analysis to the label is key.
  • Work on templates and presentations to act as Introductions to the beginning of key artist planning and label meetings, summarising the artists presence online. This would include their presence, engagement and consumption across Socials and Commerce.
  • Lead on putting together frameworks and templates for the Audience team to be able to analyse and demonstrate Audience metrics including Growth and Engagement.
  • The way data needs to be presented to the label, our artists and management teams must be using the latest tools and software and be a key differentiator for Island versus our competitors.
  • Initiative to set own tasks to provide added value to the entire label.
  • Demonstrate excellent presentation skills to educate findings clearly to the label and management teams.
  • Collaborate with UMG’s Data Scientist, Insights and Commercial Intelligence Teams to build case studies of consumption behaviour to educate the rest of the label.
  • Work closely with Fused (our internal digital advertising agency) to measure the effectiveness and optimisation of our paid media vs Consumption.
  • The analyst will work across and closely with Commerce/Streaming, Audience, Marketing, A&R and Finance.
Person Specification
  • Personable and actively emerged in music culture and its consumption across multiple channels.
  • Highly numerate, analytical and results orientated with a clear focus on high quality and business profit.
  • Excellent presentation skills.
  • Experience in having to be self-motivated and pro-active in orchestrating and managing key data orientated projects.
  • Team player with a positive attitude.
  • Self-motivated, hard-working, and enthusiastic.
  • Experience in SQL.
  • Excellent IT skills including competency across all Microsoft packages, especially Excel and PowerPoint or similar.
  • Diligent and reliable, capable of managing and delivering on multiple projects simultaneously and to a high standard, both autonomously and as part of a team.
  • Proven ability to make rational judgements from the available information, by demonstrating an inquisitive and analytical approach.
  • Excellent communication skills, written and oral.
  • Very familiar with current issues and music-based trends; stays ahead of the game.
