About us

Biological Services is an integral part of UCL’s biomedical research efforts, providing expert services to researchers primarily within the School of Life and Medical Sciences. The department is composed of around 80 staff based across a number of UCL’s sites in London. We work collaboratively with researchers to deliver an outstanding service and ensure that a high standard of animal welfare is maintained throughout.

About the role

The post holder will join UCL Biological Services as a Research Support Technician (Procedural). To be a pro-active member of the Biological services team in a multi-species facility. Responsibility for overseeing breeding programmes, husbandry, monitoring and maintenance of experimental animals. To perform regulated and non-regulated procedures individually and as part of study teams. Contribute to the everyday running and maintenance of work throughout the animal facility. The post holder will take responsibility for the everyday organisation of their workload. The successful applicant will work to ensure best practice, good husbandry and animal welfare.

About you

* General animal husbandry and maintenance of transgenic/immunocompromised mouse breeding programmes and species housed within the facility * Taking delivery of diet/bedding and consumables and the distribution of supplies within the unit o General room/ lab/ theatre cleaning and cage washing * Efficiently perform and accurately record a variety of regulated/non-regulated procedures individually and as part of study teams *To assist in the planning and design of studies, in addition to prepare daily for individual experiments including relevant documentation *To contribute to in-house training of staff and researchers in procedural/Sch 1 techniques and provide support for in-house training courses * Set up and maintain laboratory/theatre equipment and consumables * Have a working knowledge of project licences, including severity conditions, adverse effects and humane end points * Contribute to development and implementation of standard operating procedures for the facility * Help identify and propose improvements to experimental procedures advising on practical opportunities to implement the 3R’s * Maintain up to date computer entry of stock, breeding and study data and costings * To observe and maintain an awareness of Fire and Health and Safety Regulations; * To observe and maintain an awareness of Standard Operating Procedures and other governance arrangements; * To carry out any other duties which are within the scope, spirit and purpose of the job as requested by the line manager or Head of Department.
