Institute of Inflammation and Ageing

Location: University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham UK

Full time starting salary is normally in the range £33,348 to £43,155, with potential progression once in post to £45,737

Grade 7

Full Time, Fixed Term contract up to October 2024

Background

To create and contribute to the creation of knowledge by undertaking a specified range of activities within an established research programme. The project concerned is a collaboration with King’s College London to phenotype a cohort of master cyclists and matched sedentary older adults. The aim is to determine which aspects of the aged phenotype are associated with physical inactivity and which are due to intrinsic ageing processes.

Role Summary

  • Work within the specified research grant and contribute to writing bids for follow on funding
  • Operate within area of specialism, namely human ageing, with a high degree of independence
  • Analyse and interpret research findings and results, including an ability to perform systematic reviews and meta-analyses
  • Contribute to dissemination of data including writing scientific papers, attending conferences and being involved in public communication activities
Main Duties

The responsibilities may include some but not all of the responsibilities outlined below.

  • Develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research, with assistance of a mentor if required
  • Contribute to writing bids for research funding
  • Analyse and interpret data, notably human physiology and immune phenotyping data
  • Apply knowledge in a way which develops new intellectual understanding
  • Disseminate research findings for publication, research seminars etc
  • Supervise students on research related work and provide guidance to PhD students where appropriate to the discipline
  • Undertake management/administration arising from research, notably liaison with the team at KCL
  • Contribute to Institute research-related activities and research-related administration
  • Collect research data through a variety of research methods, including immune phenotyping and functional analysis, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses
  • Present research outputs, including drafting academic publications and presenting at conferences
  • Provide guidance, as required, to support staff and any students who may be assisting with the research, notably guidance on immune phenotyping for the team at KCL.
  • Deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines
  • Promotes equality and values diversity acting as a role model and fostering an inclusive working culture.

Person Specification

  • First degree in area of life sciences and a PhD degree relevant to the research area, namely exercise physiology, exercise immunology, in the context of human ageing
  • High level analytical capability in immune phenotyping, human muscle physiology
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly
  • Fluency in relevant models, namely human ageing cohorts with deep phenotyping. This is an ongoing project with fixed term funding and so the person must be able to carry out the research with little or no training
  • Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively
  • Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes
  • Contribute to the planning and organising of the research programme and/or specific research project
  • Co-ordinate own work with others to avoid conflict or duplication of effort
  • Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010, and how to actively ensure in day to day activity in own area that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly
