Position Overview & Specifications

The role

This is a national-level role hosted by the University of Bristol, on behalf of the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) School for Primary Care Research (SPCR), to support Patient/Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) in primary care research. As the postholder you will work closely with the SPCR Senior Programme Manager, the SPCR’s academic lead for PPIE and the local PPIE leads in its nine partners, and other members of the directorate team. You will support the SPCR PPIE leads in building capacity and delivering PPIE locally. You will also represent the SPCR in national PPIE networks and collaborations.

What will you be doing?

The main tasks and responsibilities include:

  • Liaise and build relationships within the SPCR to ensure that the SPCR PPIE strategy is embedded across its partners
  • Liaise and maintain relationships with other internal and external stakeholders in order to identify and promote national best practice in PPIE and maximise the potential impact of PPIE in research design and delivery
  • Undertake data gathering and reporting activities and identify opportunities to strengthen capacity building around PPIE
  • Support networking and sharing of best practice among SPCR PPIE leads
  • Recruit and support public contributors for involvement in SPCR funding panels, trainee selection and advisory board meetings
  • Advise researchers and respond to issues arising and/or changing priorities within SPCR, with appropriate actions

The SPCR Directorate team mostly works virtually but you will be required to attend meetings in person 3-4 times a year and other events at least twice a year. This is a national role in which you may be based anywhere in the United Kingdom, working remotely most of the time. However, as the postholder you will be required to attend campus in Bristol approximately monthly during the initial service review period, to get acquainted with colleagues.

You should apply if

Enthusiasm for, and experience of conducting Patient/Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) in health research, including recruiting public contributors and facilitating PPIE input into projects; knowledge about best practice in PPIE, including NIHR standards and the INCLUDE Ethnicity Framework; excellent communication skills, initiative and significant experience in a project management, analysis and reporting role in projects with multiple partners.
