Position Overview & Specifications

The role

The University of Bristol seeks to employ a 3 year postdoctoral researcher in large scale compound flood hazard modelling. This work is funded by the CLARE programme. CLARE is a partnership between the FCDO and the International Development Research Centre (IDRC). The project is ‘REsilience and PReparedness to tropical cyclones across Southern Africa’ (REPRESA) led by the Global Change Institute, University of the Witwatersrand, the University of Bristol, and Eduardo Mondlane University, Mozambique.

The postdoctoral researcher will work with the project team and partners, feeding into the larger REPRESA goals. The ideal candidate will have a PhD in a physical science discipline, with a track record in hydrodynamic modelling or closely related field. An understanding of hydrological extremes is also essential. The candidate will need to be able to build and execute hydrodynamic models and develop basic scripting codes. Other desired, but not essential qualities, include knowledge relevant to disaster risk reduction, hazard mapping, risk assessment, tropical cyclone hazards and climate change projections for Africa.

What will you be doing?

You will be responsible for the setup and implementation of hydrodynamic model simulations using the LISFLOOD-FP and SCHISM models, the simulation of flood events from a range of convection permitting climate models and statistical analysis of model outputs. You will be guided by the project Principal investigator, Elizabeth Kendon, and Co-Investigator Jeffrey Neal. You will take a lead role in collaborating with the other institutions and project partners including in the UK and southern Africa. The expectation is that you will publish regularly throughout the duration of the post. The exact details of the work can be found in the REPRESA project proposal, which is available on request from Elizabeth Kendon.

You should apply if

Experience in analysing model/observation or reanalysis output

Evidence of scientific excellence

Experience of hydrodynamic modelling

Ability to write code
