Position Overview & Specifications

This is an exciting opportunity for you to join the research team at the Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence (CFI) as a Postdoctoral Research Associate, working on the RECOG-AI project. RECOG-AI is a DARPA-funded project on the Robust Evaluation of Cognitive Capabilities and Generality in Artificial Intelligence. The main objective of the project is to improve AI evaluation by providing a framework and benchmarks for measuring the capabilities of AI systems. The work will be drawing from multiple disciplines, but primarily from computer science, and animal and human psychology.

The appointment will initially be for 12 months or until the 30 September 2024, whichever is soonest.

CFI is a highly interdisciplinary research centre addressing the challenges and opportunities posed by artificial intelligence (AI). This post is situated within the Kinds of Intelligence research programme, based in central Cambridge. You should have (or be about to achieve) a PhD in a relevant field and should provide strong evidence of potential for research and publication at the highest level, as well as strong interest in engagement with the cognitive sciences. You will work alongside an interdisciplinary team in the RECOG-AI project (http://lcfi.ac.uk/projects/kinds-of-intelligence/recog-ai/) - in particular with Dr Lucy Cheke, Dr John Burden and Professor Jose Hernandez-Orallo - and should be able to work well with others of divergent expertise.

The following backgrounds and experiences will be an advantage, either independently or in combination. This is a highly interdisciplinary project, and we are seeking a combination of these skills in the team. It is essential for a candidate to have experience in one or more of these fields, however, we do not expect any given candidate to have experience in all fields.

  • Psychology (comparative, developmental, psychometrics)/Cognitive Science/Animal Behaviour.
  • AI or AI Evaluation, particularly foundation models, LLMs, (deep) reinforcement learning, multimodal models, causal models, Bayesian inference.

More information about the project can be found in the Further Particulars, and at http://lcfi.ac.uk/projects/kinds-of-intelligence/recog-ai/

For your application to be considered, please ensure you upload the following:

  • A Curriculum Vitae
  • A Covering Letter of no more than 1,000 words. This should detail relevant experience and interests with particular regard to the different elements of the RECOG-AI project.
  • The names and contact details of two referees who are familiar with your work

If you have any questions about this vacancy or the application process or procedure, please contact the HR team at sahhr@admin.cam.ac.uk. For any questions about this project, please contact Dr Lucy Cheke on lgc23@cam.ac.uk.

The closing date for applications is midnight (BST) on Sunday 9 July 2023. Interviews are expected to take place in Cambridge the week commencing 17 July 2023, subject to change.
