Position Overview & Specifications

Applications are invited for the position of Research Assistant to join the group of Professor Bertie Gottgens within The Wellcome Trust ¿ Medical Research Council Cambridge Stem Cell Institute and Department of Haematology on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.

The successful candidates will join a collaborative research programme, with the aim to understand fundamental principles of cell fate choice in mouse gastrulation and early organogenesis. This Wellcome Trust-funded project will take advantage of single-cell molecular and spatial profiling techniques, lineage tracing and genetic perturbations to produce extensive and high-resolution insights into cell fate decisions during mouse development. Experiments will include single cell multi-omics analysis of the epiblast and primitive streak cells, epigenetic editing approaches to target candidate elements to effectively influence haematopoiesis, generation of chimeras and ESC in vitro differentiation assays.

Appointment at Research Assistant level is dependent on having a BSc in biological sciences (or an equivalent qualification in a relevant subject) as well as experience in molecular biology techniques, mammalian development, stem cell research and data analysis.

The post holder will be expected to participate in the design and planning of experiments. They will be required to perform laboratory-based research and engage effectively with bioinformatic and other project collaborators. The ability to learn quickly and to work both independently and as part of a team is essential. The post-holder will become a valued member of the Gottgens Group and will work alongside students and researchers (both wet and dry). Prior experience of mammalian development, ESC differentiation, single-cell technologies (such as but not limited to scATAC-seq and scRNA-Seq), experience with transgenic animals, CRISPR editing and generation of ESC lines as well as bioinformatic analysis skills is desirable; however, we will consider all the skills and strengths that you have.

Prospective candidates are encouraged to contact Dr Nicola Wilson nkw22@cam.ac.uk directly when considering an application to discuss the project in greater detail.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 3 years in the first instance.
