Role Description

Department

Applications are invited for a joint appointment of a Research Fellow with the Vulnerability & Policing Futures Research Centre and the Institute of Mental Health Research at York, under the management of Professor Lina Gega from Hull York Medical School and Professor Adam Crawford from York Law School.

The Vulnerability & Policing Futures Research Centre (VPRC) is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council and aims to reshape how the police and other organisations work together in order to reduce harm among vulnerable people in society. The Institute of Mental Health Research at York (IMRY) brings together mental health work from over 30 departments, schools and offices at the University of York, whose aim is to improve the lives and care of those who are most vulnerable due to mental health problems.

We are seeking to appoint a post-doctoral research fellow for 2 years to work jointly across VPRC and IMRY. The purpose of this post is to generate grant applications and deliver excellent research with clear pathways to impact, as part of an interdisciplinary programme of work that aligns with the aims of both VPRC and IMRY.

The post requires experience and familiarity with analysing both qualitative and quantitative data, along with a commitment to explore both innovative methodologies and data analytic techniques with integration of different sources of data.

Role

Your will understand and draw on existing research networks, methods and findings from VPRC and IMRY, while developing protocols for complementary projects. You will carry out the groundwork for these projects, which may include conducting literature reviews, organising public and service user consultations via interviews and focus groups, mapping services, administering surveys and analysing quantitative and narrative data. You will identify suitable funders and sponsors, lead and support the development of grant applications, write for academic and non-academic publication, present at internal and external events and supervise junior members of staff.

The role will involve the following main responsibilities:

  • To contribute to the design and delivery of project fieldwork and lead on data collection and engagement with external research partners.
  • To contribute to and/or lead on the production of research outputs and research outcomes.
  • To participate actively in the planning and management of research projects, including supervising the work of others and providing expert advice and guidance
  • To contribute to and/or lead the obtaining of external research funding

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

  • First degree in mental health, psychology, criminal justice or social sciences
  • PhD or equivalent experience in mental health, psychology, criminal justice or social sciences.
  • Knowledge of mechanisms and care pathways for mental health to engage in high quality research
  • Knowledge of a range of research techniques and methodologies, both quantitative and qualitative
  • We will add the University’s Equality and Diversity statement to all advertisements:

Interview date: Tuesday 9th May 2023
