Position Overview & Specifications

We have an exciting opportunity in the Department of Chemistry for someone with a passion for Polymer chemistry and/or electrochemistry looking to use their skills to make an impact in the development of electroactive molecularly imprinted polymer materials for the detection of oral cancer biomarkers.

Molecularly Imprinted Polymers (MIPs) are simple, elegant biomimetics that incorporate binding sites bearing steric and chemical functionality complementary to a given target. They represent a generic, versatile, scalable, cost-effective approach to the creation of synthetic molecular receptors, and have uses in separation sciences, purification, sensors and catalysis. Under the supervision of Prof Nick Turner, this position will focus on the development of electroactive molecularly imprinted polymer materials for the detection of oral cancer biomarkers.

This multidisciplinary project is linked to a CRUK-EPSRC-MRC funded award with multiple academic partners. You will form part of a growing team at University of Sheffield looking at pushing the capabilities of molecular imprinting techniques and targeted recognition polymers at the biological interface.

We are looking for a highly motivated individual with a background in polymer chemistry and/or electrochemistry. Expertise in a good range of common bioanalytical techniques will be required; and prior experience of some of the following areas will be advantageous: biosensors, molecular imprinting and handling of biological samples.

You will hold a good first degree in chemistry, biochemistry, pharmacology or similar, and potentially a doctoral level qualification (PhD) in a related subject.

The Turner group is based in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Sheffield which is consistently ranked in the top 100 of the world’s universities. The group sit-within the Polymers research group giving you access to world-leading equipment, expertise and training to undertake your research. We also collaborate across the Faculties of Science and Engineering.

As this project has a strong interdisciplinary focus and will involve regular interaction with academic and industrial partners, it is important that you are enthusiastic, organised, have good oral and written communication skills and are flexible in your approach to working. You will be expected to generate outputs that will contribute to the next REF exercise both in terms of academic excellence and impact; work with external collaborators, and represent the university and group at conferences.

You should include a 2 page cover letter highlight your suitability and a full CV alongside the University application form.

We’re one of the best not-for-profit organisations to work for in the UK. The University’s Total Reward Package includes a competitive salary, a generous Pension Scheme and annual leave entitlement, as well as access to a range of learning and development courses to support your personal and professional development.

We build teams of people from different heritages and lifestyles from across the world, whose talent and contributions complement each other to greatest effect. We believe diversity in all its forms delivers greater impact through research, teaching and student experience.
