Position Overview & Specifications
Working closely with departmental staff and the central Student Wellbeing Service you will be the principal contact for Computer Science students who require support with their wellbeing. Proactively identifying students who may be struggling through analysis and interpretation of data, you will offer early intervention and provide support to students through appointments and on a drop-in basis. Drawing on your professional knowledge and experience, you will take and recommend action and offer ongoing advice to students and staff on all matters relating to student wellbeing. You will identify complex issues and liaise with colleagues in central Student Support Services, to make referrals to clinical services for mental health at Sheffield and outside agencies as appropriate.
Drawing on your expertise, you will provide input to senior management, academics and student support staff on mental health and wellbeing matters in the Department. This will include contributing to curriculum review, shaping the way the Department delivers teaching and how we recruit staff and students. You will play a role in integrating and developing the provision for mental health, wellbeing and neurodiverse conditions including Autism Spectrum Disorder into the policies, practices and environment of the Department, thereby contributing to our Inclusive Curriculum agenda, part of the University’s Vision. You will benefit from management, supervision and peer support from the University’s centrally managed Student Wellbeing Service, the wider network of Faculty Wellbeing Advisers in the University, providing you with continuing professional development opportunities and access to support.
You will hold a relevant professional qualification in mental health, together with experience of working in a mental health setting. With the ability to build trusting relationships quickly and to utilise psychological formulation (ie. construct meaning out of mental distress), you will have a strong interest in supporting students to achieve their academic potential through promoting positive wellbeing and self-care. A self-reflective practitioner committed to ongoing professional development, you will have excellent interpersonal skills, a professional manner, and the ability to act with discretion and diplomacy. In addition, you will have the ability to think strategically and to formulate policy and experience of providing expert advice to other professionals.
