Position Overview & Specifications

U2313923NP

Each year in August the University runs the Confirmation, Clearing and Adjustment Hotline to find suitably qualified applicants to fill any places that remain on our undergraduate programmes. This year we are looking for 30 students to take part in this important event.

In order to be considered for a place in the hotline team you will need to be currently enrolled at the University of Southampton as a student studying on either an undergraduate or postgraduate programme. If you are currently studying on a postgraduate programme, you will ideally have experience of having studied at UG level in the UK.

The Role:

Working as part of the hotline team, you will speak to applicants seeking a place in clearing, offer places on our courses where we have vacancies and speak to applicants wanting to confirm their place with the university.

We are planning to locate our hotline teams on campus this year. However, our contingency planning includes a remote option, so you should therefore be prepared to work either on campus or from home. We’ll be using the MS Teams platform to receive the calls in both scenarios, so access to a computer in your home environment is essential. If you are selected and we need to make the switch to remote working, we will work with you to ensure your equipment is suitable for the role.

Key Skills:

You will need to have a good telephone manner and the ability to enter data accurately whilst under pressure.

Personal attributes:

You will need to be confident, calm under pressure, friendly, polite, sympathetic and have an empathy for callers applying for courses through clearing.

Dates and hours

Thursday 17th August (A-Level Results Day), 7.30am-6pm

Friday 18th August, 7.30am-6pm.

Please note that the number of ambassadors required for the hotline on Friday will be fewer than on the Thursday. If we fill all of our course vacancies, the hotline may close early on Thursday. However, ambassadors will still be paid until 6pm.

There will be a mandatory training session in the weeks before Clearing. This training sessions will be offered remotely via Microsoft Teams and ambassadors will be paid to attend this session.

It is not possible for the University to reimburse accommodation or travel expenses.

Those studying on a Student visa are welcome to apply to join the hotline team but, under the terms of their visa, may be subject to restrictions on the number of hours that can be worked.
