Who we are:

West Midlands Police Museum exists to celebrate the policing heritage of the West Midlands, and use it to engage with communities to build trust and confidence in policing. At the West Midlands Heritage Museum, we have renovated an old overnight holding station to now be a beacon of history, educating visitors through our many interactive displays. We have information on how WMP has evolved over time, pieces of equipment used by police officers through time and even a mystery for our visitors to solve when they explore the lower level. We are open up to seven days a week for general opening, school visits, corporate events, talks and guided tours.

Why we need your help:

As we are part of West Midlands Police, any costs we incur over and above the income we generate, is a cost to West Midlands Police. We are therefore always looking for new ways to generate income and identify grants and funds that would support costs that we incur or enable us to complete additional projects. There are a significant number of organisations, charities and funding bodies that would offer financial or in-kind support for specific costs or projects. We need help in identifying these opportunities and applying for funding. As our volunteer you would be the one to research these bids and grants to find us new sources of income, and you may also be the one to put the application in. Your help will allow us to keep improving and investing in our museum, continuing to educate and inform all of our visitors for the future.

We are looking for a team of enthusiastic volunteers to assist us with any of the following:

  • Research companies and charities that may be willing to invest in the WMP Museum.
  • Start the claims process by applying for low level grants using the information you have received.
  • Work with the WMP Heritage Museum team to keep them updated on the application

Skills and Experience:

Essential:

  • Experience researching a topic
  • Strong research Skills
  • Friendly and approachable
  • Good communications skills & a good level of written and spoken English
  • Reliable with good time-keeping skills
  • Happy to work independently or as part of a team
  • Attention to detail and good observational skills
  • Administration skills (Microsoft Office, Internet)
  • Good people skills

Hours:

We are looking for volunteers to commit at least 16 hours per month ideally for 3-6 months. Time and date to be agreed with the department supporting the volunteer

West Midlands Police is a Disability Confident Leader - the highest level an organisation can achieve under the scheme run by the Department of Work and Pensions. As part of our commitment we operate a ‘Disability Confident Interview Scheme’ - all candidates who declare a disability and meet the essential criteria for the role will be offered an interview.

It is important to note that there may be occasions where it is not practicable or appropriate to interview all disabled people who meet the essential criteria for the job. For example: in certain recruitment situations such as high-volume, seasonal and high-peak times, the employer may wish to limit the overall numbers of interviews offered to both disabled people and non-disabled people. In these circumstances, the employer could select the candidates who best meet the essential criteria for the job, as they would do for non-disabled applicants.

"Diversity and Inclusion Vision: Maximise the potential of people from all backgrounds through a culture of fairness and inclusion to deliver the best service for our communities"
